Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture does not hurt.
Sometimes there is a slight tingling or heavy sensation that is temporarily felt.
This subtle sensation may be felt at the acupuncture point, or within a different part of the body. It is not painful or uncomfortable, & it disappears while resting during the treatment, as physiological homeostasis is established.
The sensation is known as dé qì.
With recent technical advancements in observing brain function and the central nervous system, it is now known that dé qì is the body's communication from the acupuncture point to the central nervous system via afferent neurons and then from the central nervous system to the target organs and areas of the body that are in need of physiological change.  This messaging from the central nervous system is sent via efferent neurons to the target sight.
Gently touching or needling acupuncture points is a way to start this communication loop so the body can initiate its own self healing, all while the client has a restful nap.
